Shoghi is a small suburb of Shimla, in the hill state of Himachal Pradesh. It is about 13 km short of Shimla on the Ambala-Shimla national highway. The town is tiny, at most, a 2 km stretch of road whose highlights are the warm and hospitable inhabitants and the surrounding natural beauty.

Shoghi is considered as a cheap alternative to Shimla, but it proffers much more to a city dweller. The placid cool environs of this hill station with the encircling lush green valleys, the tall oak and rhododendron, clear streams that babble over beautifully coloured stones is a perfect place for a weary soul. Bestowed with tranquillity, bliss and solitude, is the right spot to de-stress, relax, delink from the outside world, read, bring out the creative you - dabble with paint, indulge in photography, take up bird watching and discern the pleasant symphony of the forest, enjoy short walks or treks through its ample trekking routes.

 Orientation

Shoghi has grown to be a weekend destination for those desiring peace and seclusion. Park Woods, a village resort is a major crowd puller, while Jakhoo Hill, Viceregal Lodge, Kurfi and Kandaghat are some interesting places worth visiting. Shoghi is renowned for its in-house fruit products marketed under the brand name Minchys Fruit Products, while the locally made pickles, juices, syrups and jellies are a good buy too.

With its cool climes and dense woods Shoghi is a promising spot for trekkers and campers -a beacon for adventurer seekers. The trekking trails are very challenging and it has the prefect setting for camping and bird watching.

Tara Devi Temple

The temple of Tara Devi is one of the significant temples of the area, standing at elevation of 6073 ft, is approximately 11 kms south of Shimla. The temple can be reached via Shoghi, after taking a right turn just before driving past the last limits of the township. The drive ahead is nerve racking, the ascent is steep but the view is breathtaking.

According to folklore, in a vision Tara Devi appeared before Raja of Junga on this mountain, out of sheer reverence he immediately built a temple on the spot. During October and November, the important months of Hindu festivals, the temple is overcrowded; at all other times its generally peaceful.

The landscape around Shoghi is dotted with numerous temples, with virtually one in every village and each to its best. There are two temples which are reckoned as the best for beautiful architecture and aesthetics. About 6 km south-west of Shoghi, lies the sleepy hamlet of Anji amidst lush verdant surroundings, is well known for the scared Hanuman Temple that stands at its edge. A 3 km drive further, atop a emerald knoll is the small village of Kadur, famous for the Kali Temple, presenting two manifestations of goddess Kali.
