Shimla, is a one of the favourite tourist destination in India. This hotspot is often referred to as 'Queen of the Hills', is the state capital of Himachal Pradesh. Formerly known as Simla, this wonderful locale was designated as the summer capital of India by the British in 1864. Shimla owes its character almost wholly to the British, who turned this stopover on the way to the temple of hill goddess Shamla into the summer capital of the sub-continent.


Located in the north-west Himalayas, the city is draped in forests of pine, rhododendron, and oak, experiences pleasant summers and cold, snowy winters. The town at several areas reflects the colonial connection housing buildings in the Victorian style. The Kalka-Shimla Railway is one of the longest narrow gauge railway routes still operating in India and recently granted the status of a World Heritage Site. The city is named after the goddess Shamla Devi, re- incarnation of the Hindu Goddess Kali.


Shimla spreads majestically on a central ridge with seven surrounding peaks. The original village of Shimla first sprang up on the flat ridge and developed vertically, settlements moving upwards as each new viceroy took over from his predecessor.


Crowned by a temple dedicated to Kamna Devi 15-minutes walk from Boileauganj on Shimla-Bilaspur road. The Prospect hill at an altitude of 2,155 mts offers a spectacular view of the area.


Summer Hill, situated at distance of a km from Boilaeuganj at an altitude of 1,283m, is a picturesque township on Shimla-Kalka railway line. It is a quiet town offering long shady walks. Mahatma Gandhi during his visits to Shimla, lived here, in the elegant Georgian House of Raj Kumari Amrit Kaur. HP University is also situated here. 


Himachal State Museum & Library is located 2.5-km west of the Scandal Point, open on all days except Mondays and public holidays. It showcases a fine collection of ancient historical sculptures, miniature paintings, coins, wood carvings, jewellery and photos of the region. While the library houses numerous historical books and manuscripts.


Viceregal Lodge & Botanical Gardens atop the Observatory Hill is also known as "Rashtrapati Niwas". This magnificent building was the residence of the British Viceroy Lord Dufferin. The lodge was completed in 1888 and built on the lines of English Renaissance style of architecture. It is a impressive mansion with polished teak panelled interiors, the walls are of light blue limestone and has wrought stonework in grey sandstone. It is surrounded by well-manicured gardens and sprawling lawns on three sides while the fourth side is perfect for viewing the setting sun in the Himalayan foothills. The bulk of the estate now houses the Institute of Advanced Study. The entry is by ticket and the grounds are open for the public only on Sundays. 


The Ridge is the large open space in the heart of town with excellent view of the mountain ranges. Situated here the old Christ Church, built in the Neo-Gothic style and the new Library, a style Tudor building are worth seeing.


The Mall is the main shopping street of Shimla with restaurants, clubs, banks, tourist office and more. With no vehicular traffic, it is a a good place to stroll and sit around, the view is enchanting  in the evenings when  the fading rays of the sun casts a crimson glow while the street lamps twinkle in the twilight. The Gaiety Theatre, is located here, a reproduction of an old British theatre is a center of cultural activities. The Mall joins the Ridge at the Scandal Point',  the two famous meeting grounds of Shimla,


Shimla is not just the substantiation of some grand monuments and colonial architecture; it is also offers panoramic views and trekking trails that attract adventure enthusiasts and honeymooners alike.


Like any other Indian city, fairs and festivals are the highlights of Shimla tourism. The most significant event in the valley is the Summer Festival organized by the Government in the month of June, which showcases the rich culture and tradition of the Himalayan states through vibrant and brilliant performances of folk dancers and musicians. While the festivals like  Dussehra, Shivratri and Christmas are celebrated with equal zeal.


In autumn, Shimla looks gorgeously beautiful and when the days are balmy and dazzling and the nights are crisp and chilly. A typical hilly terrain with a picturesque countryside, wonderful climate and viable social standards, it has aptly acquired the coveted status of the most desired destination in a trippers travel list.
