Saputara is a picturesque hill station situated on the densely forested plateau in Sahyadri Range, in the Dang district of Gujarat state in India. The town, the only hill station in Gujarat, is situated on the Maharashtra-Gujarat border.  Saputara means the 'Abode of Serpents' a fact is highlighted by an image of a snake on the banks of the River Sarpagana.

 

Saputara has been developed as a planned hill resort with all the necessary amenities like hotels, parks, swimming pools, boat club, theatres, ropeways and a museum to ensure an enjoyable holiday in the cool climes of the hills.

 Orientation

A scenic hill station, small enough to be entirely covered by foot with cool climate luring visitors to spend days in tranquillity amidst dense green woods and azure skies. Its rich bio-diversity and natural bounty is a treat to the city- sore eyes. The beautiful landscape dotted by waterfalls and views of the sunrise and sunset are simply breathtaking. Monsoons always add on loads of magic to its dreamlike environ.

 

Minimally commercialised and still unspoiled the town is meant for leisure seekers with an eye for fun and adventure. The Saputara lake with its picture perfect surroundings is one of the major attractions with boating facilities - paddle boats and row boats and joy rides synonymous to all hill stations goes without saying are here too, but its a double offer, on camel back as well as on horse back. It can boast of its prime attraction the 'Pushpak Ropeway', considered the longest ropeway in the country and attracting a large crowd of both young and old. There is a hill resort with hotels, parks, swimming pools, theatres and a museum.

 

Saputara is a wonderful vacation spot for trekkers with numerous established trekking trails and several unexplored tracts amidst splendid surroundings. There are enough adventurous activities to keep one engaged, depending on the energy levels, one can go on treks to the Saputara hills, long nature walks along the Lake and its surroundings, climb to Valley view point while setting up camp in the dense woods of Saputara hills, can be the ultimate thrilling experience.

 

The trekking trails in Saputara hills and forests pose mild to rough challenges to a trekker. It is really fascinating to opt for treks on the established trekking trails to Rajat Pratap and Tridhara near Dhupgarh. The trekking trails extend up to Sangam. Mild trekking trails from Khud to Sunder Kund, then to the Jata Pura Hills and the temple atop are exhilarating.

 

For all you adventure enthusiasts, there is now more reasons to visit Saputara, as it has now introduced the high adrenalin adventure activity of para-gliding.

 

Vansda National Park

A protected area representing the thick woodlands of the Dangs and southern Gujarat is situated in the Navsari District of Gujarat. Riding on the banks of Ambika River and measuring roughly 24 km in area, the park lies about 65 km east of the town of Chikhali on the National Highway 8, and about 80 km north-east of the city of Valsad. Vansda, the town from which the name of the park is derived, is an important trading place for the surrounding area where the majority of the population is represented by adivasis (tribals).

 

Vansda lost the tiger, wild dog, otter, sambar, and sloth bear, but is still home to a diversity of mammals, including the leopard, hyena, chital, chausinga, jungle cat, common palm civet, small Indian civet, mongoose, macaque, rhesus macaque, barking deer, wild boar, hanuman langur, Indian porcupine, flying squirrel, Indian flying fox, pangolin, rusty-spotted cats, as well as the endangered great Indian squirrel.

 

There is also an abundance of pythons and 30 other species of snakes, including venomous ones like Russel's viper, cobras, kraits. Along with an entertaining variety of insects, centipedes, millipedes, and snails, there are 121 species of spiders, including the largest in Gujarat, the giant wood spider, and 8 new species of spiders were recently reported. There are about 11 types of frogs and toads to keep the snakes well-fed.

 

Besides, the mammals, reptiles, and insects, the main draw of Vansda is for bird-lovers, with more than 115 species of birds, including the racket-tailed drongo, paradise flycatcher, pompodour pigeon, grey hornbill, jungle babbler, yellow back sunbird, leaf birds, thrushes, peafowl, as well as the globally threatened forest spotted owlet, and birds found only in the Western Ghats, like the Indian great black woodpecker, malabar trogon, shama, emerald dove.
