Ranikhet is a charming hill paradise and cantonment town is perched on a ridge at an elevation of 1,829 mts in Almora district in Uttarakhand. This tiny hill station is an all time favourite with the tourists. The package is fantastic- salubrious climate, placid environs, nature at its best, trekking trails, excursions, picnic spots, ancient temples and with bit of history combined, what could one ask  more.

 

If you go by history Ranikhet means the Queen's Meadow. It is believed that Queen Padmini of Kumaon was in love with this beautiful place. Kind Sudhardev obliged by building a palace and named the locale Ranikhet, the queens field. There is no trace of the palace today, but the place is bewitching with lush green meadows, thousands of fragrant flowers, dense woods and the distant Himalayan ranges. Lost and forgotten, this picturesque hill station was rediscovered by the Britishers in 1869, when they established the headquarters of the Kumaon Regiment here. The station was then used as a retreat to escape the sweltering heat of the Indian summer. It still houses the Kumaon Regimental Center, one of the glorious infantry regiments of Indian Army.

 Orientation

Chaubatia Gardens, a picturesque spot, 10 km drive from Ranikhet is famous for apple orchards. The pleasant climes of Ranikhet are ideal for apples, apricots, peaches and various alpine fruits. Baskets of freshly harvested fruits, fruit juices and honey are available here at reasonable prices.

 

One of the prime attractions of Ranikhet is its 9- hole Golf Course, which is one of the highest golf courses of Asia. The lush green fairways of the golf course are awesome. One can pay the green fee for a day of golf.

 

Haidakhan Temple, is 4 km from Ranikhet, is dedicated to Lord Shiva built by Shri Haidakhan Maharaj who is said to be the incarnation of Lord Shiva. The splendid views of the gigantic Himalayan peaks are clearly visible from Haidakhan Temple. Built in the 8th century, Jhula Devi Temple is dedicated to Goddess Durga. The people of Uttaranchal strongly believe in Jhula Devi, one can sight numerous bells that are hung by the devotees. Ram Mandir is situated very close to Jhula Devi Mandir.

 

Syalikhet is a scenic spot, 25 km from Ranikhet,nestled amidst dense green woods and apple orchards. It is known for the famous temple of Syahi Devi.

 

Binsar Mahadev Temple is beautifully crafted and dedicated to Lord Shiva. The peaceful ambience of the temple amid verdant pines, tall deodars and cedar near a babbling stream augments its beauty.

 

Katarmal is the second most important temple to Sun God, the first one being the Sun Temple of Konark in Orissa. Katarmal is more than 800 years old. Situated 25 km from Ranikhet, this historical temple is an example of intricate sculpture.

 

Bhalu Dam is a small artificial lake with a small garden in its vicinity. It is known for its scenic beauty, panoramic view of the Himalaya and placid environs, an ideal camping ground and picnic spot and open to tourists throughout the year.
