Palampur is a verdant hill station tucked away in the Kangra Valley of Himachal Pradesh. Its pristine beauty, lush tea plantations, forests of pine and deodar, the snow capped peaks of the Dhauladhar Range looming in the horizon and cool environs are enchanting and an enticing getaway.

 

Palampur is the tea capital of northwest India but tea is just one aspect that makes it a place of special interest. Tea was introduced in the 19th century, since then it became a focus for the tea planters. Kangra tea, with its center at Palampur, has been internationally acclaimed.

 

The town has derived its name from the local word pulum', meaning lots of water. Palampur is endowed with a mild climate, vast stretches of greenery, kind curtsey of numerous mountain streams that flow through this region into plains. The town has a distinctive landscape the hills bordering on one side while the plains lie on the other flank. These mountains offer some fabulous trekking trails.

 Orientation

Palampur is a far cry from city life, nestled amidst snow capped mountains, surrounded by dense woods of oak and deodar makes it an ideal place for long walks.

 

The town is an amalgamation of faith; the beauty and spirituality of it touches the core of ones soul. The noteworthy places of religious interests are the Baijnath and Chamunda Devi temples,

 

Neugal Khad a 300 mts wide chasm, located close to the 500 year old Bundlamata Temple provides stunning views of the Dhauladhar mountain range, is ideal for a day outing.

 

Not to be missed is a ride on the Kangra Queen Toy train that runs between Palampur and Pathankot in the Kangra Valley.

 

Around

Taragarh is set amidst 15 acres of wooded estate surrounded by tea plantations and was the summer retreat of Nawab of Bahawalpur in 1931. It was named Taragarh - palace of crescent moon', after the glass pleasure pavilion the nawab built. The mansion now owned by the Jammu and Kashmir royal family scion, Dr. Karan Singh, has been converted into heritage hotel. It provides interesting insights into the bygone era and houses famous Kangra miniature paintings.

 

Buddhist monasteries there are a number of them in this town, the Tashijong monastery, near Taragarh, is one of many built after Dalai Lama settled at McLeodganj.

 

Adventure sports

Palampur is the ideal hill resort for you if you enjoy trekking and Paragliding. The mountains offer some superb trekking trails -the famous one is through the Sanghar Pass to Bharmaur via Holi.

 

The twin villages of Bir and Billing set apart by a distance of 14kms in Kangra district near Baijnath are excellent para-gliding grounds. This paragliding site is regarded among the best in the world.  Billing at 2290 mts, is the take-off site while Bir at 1400 mts, a scenic village set amidst tea plantations, is the landing site.

 

Every year since 2002, Himachal Pradesh conducts International Paragliding competitions at Bir-Billing.
