Nainital the lake district of Uttarakhand, is one of the most popular hill station in India and on every travellers wish list. It is famous for its lake, after which it is named.  Situated at an altitude of 6,358 ft, the valley is scenic with the pear-shaped lake, approximately two miles in circumference and encircled by the mountains, Naina on the north, Deopatha on the west, and Ayarpatha on the south. Trekking to higher reaches, magnificent view-unfolds of the vast plain to the south, craggy ridges lying north, bounded by the great snowy range which forms the central axis of the Himalayas.

Hindu mythology has it that the tal (lake) is one of the emerald-green eyes of Sati, Shivas wife. It is said that Naina Devi Temple at the northern end of the lake is the exact spot where her eye (nain) fell, after Vishnu chopped off her body and scattered it over the country to stop Shivas cosmic dance and destruction.

Set against the backdrop of the towering peaks of the Kumaon Hills, the lake resort has a lot to offer. From boating, visiting the zoo, picnicking in the mountains, excursions, exploring and trekking along the pine scented trails into the neighbouring groves. Nainital has all that one looks out for on a holiday. Jaunting is the best way to explore this small town.

Its temperate summers are a big draw for holidayers, who come in thousands adding to the gaieties of town, which can get loud and overbearing. It is closed to heavy vehicular traffic during the peak season making it easy and comfortable for the pedestrians.

Though the town has grown considerably and the surrounding forest that teemed with wildlife has been encroached upon, the place is still vibrant and charismatic. The essence lingers, the clear mountain air, the lovely woods and traces of Jim Corbett's town with its history still manifests in the present day resort.
