Naggar is among the most beautiful and enchanting places around the hill station of Manali in Himachal Pradesh. Situated at an altitude of 1851 mts, on the left bank of river Beas - this ancient town is very picturesque with panoramic views, especially to the North West of the valley. Naggar the former capital of Kullu, can boast of a royal lineage and  its beautiful ancient Castle.

Despite constant influx of tourists thronging the towns of Kullu and Manali in thousands, it still remains favourite amongst the Himalayan destinations in the country. Though these two towns are always packed like sardines, the numerous adjoining valleys like Naggar, are a welcome change, adorning an magical atmosphere woven with peace and solitude.

The steep ascent from Patlikhul on the way from Kullu takes you past winding miles with series of hairpin bends through apple orchards and cedar forests to Naggar, the capital of the erstwhile Kullu kingdom, for over 1500 years. It is abounded by lush greenery of plum and apple orchards of neighbouring villages Raison and Katrain to its south and the imposing snow-capped peaks of the Greater Himalayan range to its north.

 Orientation

Naggar has a mystic appeal, unlike the other towns of the Kullu valley; it is perched high up in the mountains with some classic views. The best way to navigate the town is on foot.

Naggar castle was built by Raja Sidh Singh of Kullu around 1460 A.D., now converted into HPTDC hotel. The ancient castle apart from its spectacular view of the Kullu valley and superb location, it showcases an authentic western Himalayan style of architecture. Here, a gallery houses the paintings of the Russian artist Nicholas Roerich. There are three ancient temples in very distinctive styles near the castle.

A two kilometres winding pathway, above the bus stand leads to the abode of Nikolai Roerich, a Russian painter who made Kullu Valley his home. Devika Rani, the actress of yesteryears lived here after she married Roerichs son Svetoslav in 1945. The residence is now home for the exquisite gallery of paintings. The gallery was founded by Svetoslav Roerich and Devika Rani in 1962. It is managed by the International Roerich Trust and has been named Roerich Heritage Museum. The governments of Russia and Himachal Pradesh now jointly manage it.

Walking should be the forte to make the best of your stay here with your family. An invigorating walk to the tiny hamlet of Nishala is a must. The trek takes a good couple of hours uphill through the deodar forests and views that leave one spellbound.
