A small picturesque beach town, Murud is situated in Raigad district in Maharashtra. Glittering coastline of striking sandy beaches, fringed with coconut and betel palms against the silhouette of ancient forts makes this magnificent yet sleepy fishing village a hot spot for the tourists.

Murud-Janjira is the local name for the formidable sea fort situated on an island just off the coastal village of Murud. It was occupied by the Siddis and is famous for being the only fort along India's Western coast that remained impregnable despite Dutch, Maratha and English East India Company attacks.

The Fort

The commanding island fortress of Janjira stands on an oval-shaped island off the Arabian Sea coast near the port town of Murud. The ancient fort was strengthened by Malik Ambar, the Abyssinian Siddi regent of Ahmednagar kings. It became the 16th-century capital of the Siddis of Janjira, descendants of sailor-traders from the Horn of Africa.

It is considered one of the strongest marine forts in India. Janjira with its 12m-high walls seem to emerge straight from the sea, remained unconquered till the end. The forts 19 rounded bastions, still intact, have many cannons rusting on them. All major gates of the fort have prominent "Ashok-Chakras", while the outer wall flanking the main gate, has a sculpture depicting a tiger-like beast clasping elephants in its claws. Finally, now it has succumbed to none other than the ravages of nature; its walls are slowly crumbling and its interiors are an overgrown mass of wild greens.

The only way to reach the fort is by sailboats from Rajapuri jetty. A fascinating journey - the daunting, desolate Janjira, brings back queer visions as one travels back in time.

Murud along with its beautiful islands with stunning seascape is emerging as an interesting holiday destination. The land with its share of amazing landmarks: ancient temples, churches, the imposing Janjira, old forts, have withstood the ravages of time and are still spectacular.

Among the places of prime interest, the first on the list is the splendid island fort of 'Bassian' overlooking the Bassein beach, followed by the fort Panchala nestled atop a hill amidst cool, quiet and serene environs; a perfect spot to chill out.

On a nearby hillock is an ancient shrine dedicated to lord Dattatreya. The divinity within it is unique - a three headed embodiment of the Brahma, Vishnu and Maheswara. The panoramic view of the entire seashore from here is fabulous and so its worth the climb.

One among the popular beaches of Maharashtra, 1.75 km long Murud beach is warm, inviting and exciting with the vast expanse of pristine white sandy stretch, turquoise waters, coastline fringed with swaying palms, the distant sailboats, gentle milky white breakers and the music of the sea. Murud, paints a pretty picture, arouses the imagination of any visitor and definitely a delight for water enthusiasts

A great weekend destination, youll be happy you came.
