The Mt. Abu Wild Life Sanctuary, located in Sirohi district, spreads over an area of 112.98 sq km of subtropical evergreen forests interspersed with various rock formations stretched over one of the most ancient mountain ranges in the world, the Aravallis. It was declared a Wildlife Sanctuary in 1960. The sanctuary is long and narrow and its top spreads out into a picturesque plateau which is about 19 km. is length and 5-8 km. in breadth. Attitudinally it varies from 300m. at the foot hill to 1722 m. at Gurushikhar, the highest peak of the Aravalli Ranges.

Arna Camps

Mt. Abu attracts nature lovers and in a bid to provide the ultimate wilderness experience to the nature lovers, the State Forest Department has done a wonderful and creditable work by building up tree-houses (Machans) at a sight called Arna, an area inhabited by Panthers and Sloth Bears. Perhaps, the only kind of its place in whole of Rajasthan to have tree-houses (Machans) , right in the middle of a splendid forest to live, experience, photograph and cherish the natural marvel at Mt. Abu Wildlife Sanctuary. A ‘must not miss’ place for nature lovers.

 Orientation

Mount Abu is very rich in floral biodiversity, beginning with subtropical thorn forest at the foot hills to subtropical evergreen forest along water courses and valleys at higher altitudes. These forests consist of 112 plant families with 820 species. Mount Abu is the only place in Rajasthan to have orchids. The place is also rich in bryophytes and algae. Three species of wild roses and 16 species of ferns, some of which are quite rare have also been reported from here. The South-West part of the Sanctuary is rich in bamboo forests. The sanctuary is rich in herbal medicinal plants as well.

A variety of fauna including highly rare, threatened and endangered species are found in this sanctuary.
