Matheran is the most splendid hill-station in Maharashtra's Raigad district. This beautiful, tranquil plateau (2,636 ft.) in Sahyadris, is amid the green Jambol forest and spreads across an area of 8 sq kms. Matheran's proximity to the three Metros makes it a popular weekend getaway for urban dwellers. The name Matheran means "forest on the head" (of the mountain).

Matheran is an eco-sensitive region, declared by the Ministry of Environment and Forest, Government of India. It is one of the few places in the world where vehicular movement is strictly forbidden, this is something that makes the locale unique.

This quaint hill paradise left largely undisturbed and unpolluted with endless dense green cover, almost wears the same look since the time it was discovered by Hugh Polyntz Malet, Collector of Thane district in 1850. It became more accessible during the time of Lord Elphinstone, the former Governor of Bombay. The road from Neral to Matheran and the railway line came into being because of him.

Matheran although small is one place that stands out and one that serves as setting for a quintessential monsoon and post monsoon hill experience. The hills lined with luxuriant evergreen forest, rich in fauna and avifauna, the spectacular lookout points (38 of them in all), and pleasant climes endorses this city as a naturalist's and trekker’s paradise. Trekking is the best means to explore the area. If walking is not your forte; you have an exciting alternative to keep up the holiday spirit and discover the hidden wonders of the serene land riding on horseback.

At Panorama Point even the most jaded traveller succumbs to the spectacle of the magnificent bird's eye view of the lofty green hills, the beautiful Ulhas River, the sleepy township of Neral and if lucky, a glimpse of Mumbai westward, on a clear day. This point is about 5 kms north of Matheran market, though its a long trek but the best option - simply wonderful and totally refreshing in the rains and a cold winter morn, but quite gruelling on a hot summer day. This point has the perfect backdrop for viewing a dramatic sunrise and a beautiful sunset.

Louisa Point is to the west of the marketplace, offers an unobstructed view of the ruins of Prabal Fort, the verdant hills and majestic waterfalls during the rains.

One Tree Hill Point is an unique hill and as the name suggests has a big solitary tree growing here standing like lone sentinel. The trail leading to this point is very steep and hazardous. Following the path southwards from here leads to Shivaji's ladder which descends into the plains at Chauk via the village of Varose. Malet traversed this 9.6 kms long path to reach Matheran and the locals continue to do so.

Charlotte Lake is scenic spot, ideally suited for picnicking and must on every visitor’s itinerary.

Trekking to Matheran either from Panvel or Neral, soon after the rains is wonderful with natures bounty at its best, the endless slopes cloaked in monsoon foliage, gushing rivulets and innumerable waterfalls along the trails makes the climb up very pleasant and enjoyable.
