The picturesque town of Mashobra, is a suburb of Shimla in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. Mashobra is a unique hilly retreat surrounded by thick forests of pine and cedar, a splendid place for trippers looking for peace and tranquillity. This sylvan town houses a huge wildlife sanctuary and its landscape is dotted with many ancient temples.

The reminiscence of the British Era lingers, it is evident from the beautiful villas that line the town. The British officials and their families preferred this tiny settlement over Shimla, though in close proximity to the capital, yet proffered the privacy they sought.

Mashobra is significant as it houses one of the only two Presidential retreats in India. The other retreat is Rashtrapati Nilayam in Secunderabad.

Mashobra is an exceptionally beautiful place and a popular tourist destination. The cool climate, the crisp fresh air encourages one to amble through woods and the orchards that cradle the town. A visit to the grand villas like the Apple Tree House and Wildflower Hall is a must

Mashobra is a part of Shimla Reserve Forest Sanctuary and catchments area. The sanctuary is a home to several species of flora and fauna. The vegetation comprises of pine, oak, cedar or Himalayan deodar, and rhododendron, as well as maple and horse chestnut. The wildlife consists of jackals, kakkar (barking deer), and the occasional leopard, as well as numerous bird species such as the Himalayan eagle, pheasants, chikor and partridges.

Mahasu, is yet another place of interest, it has a very ancient temple that is famous among the pilgrims. Getting to Kufri is a picturesque drive through forested hills, a much sought place with options for winter sports and activities like skiing.

Kufri and Fagu

Kufri is a tourist hotspot for its salubrious weather, spectacular scenic beauty and sports activities, the best holiday paradise near Shimla. Beautifully tucked at an altitude of 8602ft the undulating slopes are encompassed by vast expanse of cedar forests, good for day-long outings, languorous walks, yak and pony rides during the long lazy summer days.

The hike to Mahasu Peak, the highest point in Kufri, is challenging. The snow capped peaks of Badrinath and Kedarnath ranges are visible on a crystal clear day.

Bone chilling yet thrilling, the numbness and eagerness, all things hot warm - wonderful and welcome.........Come winter the euphoria returns with the snow. The snow-mantled ski slopes of Kufri come alive (end December till February), the heavy crisp air resonates with shouts of the young ones as they dodge and play with snow balls and make snowmen. The snow is a welcome treat for group of skiers who thrive on a snowy habitat; they migrate from various corners of country. They glide through the snowy terrain of Kufri, in anticipation near-delirious, to Narkanda in search of the finest virgin ski slopes, the seasoned skiers use their skill and guile to navigate and have a great day out while the thrill seekers are out to test their metal.

Of course if you have the zing, the talent and the desire you too may be one of them.
