Manali, is a prime holiday destination at the northern end of the Kullu Valley in Himachal Pradesh. It is an idyllic hill station situated in the Beas River Valley and close to the river's source; it is a popular tourist spot for Indians in summer and a magical, snow-covered place in winter. It is a trekkers paradise, a staging point for a number of treks (Beas Kund, Chandrakhani Pass) and ideal point for white-water rafting; Manali is of major attraction for bikers and motorists as it lies en-route to Ladakh via the valley of Lahaul and Spiti over Rohtang pass.

Manali and the surrounding area is of great significance to Indian culture and heritage as it is said to be the home of the Saptarishi, or Seven Sages. Manali is named after the Hindu lawgiver Manu. Manali is also often referred to as the "Valley of the Gods". The Old Manali village has an ancient temple dedicated to sage Manu.

An ancient trade route to Ladakh originated from this small town, over the Karakoram Pass on to Yarkand and Khotan in the Tarim Basin.

 Orientation

Manali is heavenly during winters; the white landscape is marvellous luring visitors to enjoy their first brush with snow. Its not just the ice and snow, this small yet happening Himachal town has bag full of surprises for the young, the old, the energetic and the plain lazy.

As a first timer setting foot on Manali , you would invariably want to explore the old favourites - 16th century Hadimba Temple, the hot springs at Vashisth and even speculate about life and times of Old Manali. But nothing can beat the lure of rolling green meadows of Solang valley, the Rohtang Pass, the river runs and forest trails- they are awesome.

Around

Rohtang Pass, at an altitude of 3979 m above sea level, is another adventure tourist site where the mercury dips very low even on a summer day. It is the highest point on the Manali-Keylong road with breathtaking panoramic views of the mountains soaring high  above the clouds. The nearby places of interest are the Beas Kund, the source of river Beas and a small lake called Dassaur Lake.

It is best to commute carefully on this steep treacherous route with sharp twists and turns and savour the encompassing serenity and beauty of the endless  alpine vistas as you approach the summit. A mesmerising Himalayan dawn in crimson palette is what one should look out for, atop this famous pass and revel in the dazzling views of Sonapani Glacier to the north and the Lahul Valley down below.

Vashisht is a small village with natural sulphur springs about 3 km from Manali, across the Beas River. Modern bathhouses, with Turkish-style showers, have the hot water piped into them for the convenience of the visitors who come here to benefit from the medicinal properties. Vaishisht, also boasts a pair of old stone temples, opposite each other above the main square.

The excellent combination of wooded forests, snow-covered slopes, green open valleys and the fast flowing Beas makes Manali an ideal destination for mountain adventure sports. Heavy spells of snowfall open the season for the ultimate mountain sport, skiing, which can begin as early as November and last till as late as June.
