Malshej Ghat, a mountain pass in Pune district of Maharashtra, is one of the lesser known destination nestled at an elevation of 700m in the lofty rugged hills of the Western Ghats. Its scenic beauty gets magnified manifold with the onset of the monsoons. This charming hill station emerges from an uninteresting summer destination to one of the most beautiful, breathtaking spots drenched in the seasonal rain - a palette in hues of green cloaked in misty charm.

 

A typical green, woody countryside, Malshej Ghat is distinguished for its rich flora and fauna, famous for its numerous lakes, cascading waterfalls, and historic forts on cliff tops, rock formations, resorts and sanctuaries. A delightful and appealing spot for adventure enthusiasts, hikers, trekkers, nature lovers to tourists.

 

Though Malshej Ghat is an year around tourist destination but monsoon unravels its enthralling allure, casting a magical spell over this verdant hill paradise. 

 

 Orientation

Malshej swathe in monsoon magic is mind blowing. Highlighting its endless moods through dark ominous clouds, mist and rainbows, cloud bursts and fog, cool environs, tranquility and of course a series streams and innumerable waterfalls, some cascading generously onto the state highway.

 

The unending expanse of rolling hills is home to the giant Indian squirrel, hordes of animals and various species of birds. The ideal climatic conditions between July and September, with its lakes overflowing and teeming with life, draw flocks of migratory flamboyant flamingos from the Europe. They come here to breed in the marshy backwaters of Pimpalgaon-Joga Dam.

 

Harischandragad, a formidable fort in Ahmednagar District, has its history entwined with that of Malshej Ghat, for having played a major role in guarding and controlling the surrounding region. Malshej Ghat offers a terrific view of the sheer rock wall of Harishchandragad and the unusual topography around it makes the locale favourite for trekkers.

 

Konkan Kada, has fascinated travellers for quite sometime and a major attraction of Harishchandragad is beyond description - a sight you have never seen before. One needs to experience, to appreciate the wonderful world of nature's architecture. The cliff faces on the west of Konkan kada offers views to die for- with an enchanting sunset. The mornings are divine. The village of Khireshwar at the base has an ancient temple and some interesting centuries old caves which are a must visit. The fort with its three peaks and tremendous caves are perfect spots for trekking.

 

Shivneri Fort triangular in shape, perched at 300m high on an isolated hill is the birthplace of Shivaji. It is a mere 20 minutes drive from Malshej Ghat.
