Khodala, an enchanting hamlet, peaceful and quiet is located amidst dense woods at an elevation of 1,800 ft, in the Thane district of Maharashtra. Khodala still upholds all its age old traditions and sacred rituals. Its amazing rocky terrain and marvellous environs lends an exciting and unusual feel of wilderness making it a superb picnic spot and ideal for picnickers to go rambling through the countryside.

 

The road to Khodala from Mumbai runs through the Mumbai-Nasik Highway. There is not much that this region has; other than wonderful drive and if lucky, you may chance upon some wild animals en-route. Khodala offers the quiet and solitude of a holiday beyond compare, meant for only those who love to stargaze by night, roast food in open fire and lazily saunter through the hilly trails at daybreak.

Although in the proximity of the financial hub - Mumbai, it remains an unexplored holiday destination. Khodala, a traditional tribal village inhabited mostly by aborigines, is a far cry from the modern world; opens its doors for a glimpse of the rustic Indian culture. Their attire needs a special mention and likewise the practice of animal sacrifice which is still a part of their sacred rituals. These village folks dance through the night swaying to the rhythmic beat of their music celebrating special occasions. These performances are fascinating and are major attractions for any visitor.

 

A visit to Khodala is definitely rewarding for it has lots to offer terms of adventure sports like trekking, mountain biking and waterfall rappelling. The Amala wildlife sanctuary is a home to several rare species of reptiles and various animals and a fabulous place for a stopover. The dense canopy around Khodala is a birder's paradise, while tigers prowl in this the thick undergrowth.

 

Other major attractions in Khodala include Vaitarana Lake, Tringalwadi fort, and the Igatpuri-Kasara ghats. This rustic hamlet bestowed with magnificent landscapes is an exciting place to explore and highly recommended for those who need to de-stress and unwind from their hectic schedules.
