Kamshet is a para-glider's paradise in the state of Maharashtra. The beautiful hilly area in and around Kamshet is known for its rustic charm. The cluster of small villages with its traditional styled houses that are built using mud, thatch and reeds, the rugged hills, serene lakes, lush fields of paddy and sunflower, and pleasant weather adds a quintessential appeal to its untouched beauty.

 

Kamshet is set amidst the scenic locale of the Western Ghats off an important, ancient trade-route which once linked the west coast with the hinterland. The travellers from the past have left their impact on the cultural heritage of the region which is evident from ancient Buddhist cave temples and hill fortresses some dating back to the medieval period.

 

The proximity of this picturesque village to the popular twin hill stations of Khandala & Lonavala attracts many trippers and entices the outdoor recreation enthusiasts as paragliding is one of the major attractions here. With world-class paragliding facilities, it beckons a large number of flying sport aficionados.

 

It’s a great getaway and a back-to-nature destination par excellence.

 

 Orientation

The beautiful lake district of Kamshet, discreetly tucked away in the rolling Western Ghats, is a popular and major paragliding destination for both - the avid enthusiasts and the green horns.

 

One can enrol for a basic three day long paragliding course offered by several paragliding schools that have set up base here. If one is looking for a tandem joyride into the azure skies, such flight options are available which is all about having fun, an once in a life time experience– expertise no bar, age no-bar but with the spirit for adventure!

 

The Kondeshwar temple, an ancient isolated temple dedicated to lord Shiva stands out in the wilderness by a gurgling stream. Come monsoon the stream cascades into a captivating three-tiered waterfalls. A few yards ahead, the woods open up into a perfect clearing, ideal for a quiet picnic.

 

Bedsa Caves, the lesser known caves of the region are in the vicinity of Bhaja caves, approachable from Kamshet via Kale colony. These caves built in 1st century BC are famous for their animals and dancing figure sculptures yet different in appearance as compared to the other caves for their much less ornate carvings.

 

Bhandar Dongar is a hill with an ancient temple dedicated to saint, Sant Tukaram. It is popularly known as the Temple Hill, located at Talegaon near Kamshet. This hill with an ideal terrain is an excellent location for activities like hang gliding and paragliding.

It is 11 km from the twin-hill stations of Khandala and Lonavala and is accessible by road and rail from Mumbai (Bombay) and Pune.
