Igatpuri is a small nondescript hill station in the Western Ghats, Nashik District of Maharashtra. It is known more as a major railway junction than a weekend getaway.

This region is surrounded by the highest peaks in Sahyaadri i.e. Western Ghats, most of them have forts that were built during the Satavahana dynasty. It's heavenly for trekkers and hikers. The beautiful surroundings of this locale have been the backdrop of many Indian movie scenes. The lush greenery, rolling hills, foamy white waterfalls and babbling streams have made this place a treasure trove for nature lovers.

Igatpuri is a place of significance in terms of ancient meditation techniques, Vipassana. The International Centre for Vipassana meditation known as Dhammagiri, supposedly the largest Vipassana Center, is located here.

Its high altitude and cool climes makes it very special; compared to the famous hill stations of Lonavla and Khandala. This land boasts of many places of tourist interest, within and on its outskirts. It is an enchanting spot to relax and rejuvenate, the best reason to head for a weekend escape.

The beauty of Igatpuri still remains untouched by modernity. The mornings are pleasantly calm and beautiful with the early rays of the sun illuminating the horizon with hues of amber, the blades of grass laden with drops of morning dew and the air reverberating with birdsong. An opportune moment to go ambling down an untrodden trail, with a few slips and falls over the wet slippery grass on the way into the mysterious valleys, go lookout for an unnamed waterfalls and get soaking wet - it’s a wonderful feeling.

The Bhatsa River Valley is lies few metres short of Igatpuri, towards the Thal Ghat end. It’s a picturesque location with rolling valleys cloaked in dense green vegetation, the rock faces and the distant mountains soaring in the horizon.

A few kilometres away to the right of Bhatsa River Valley, is the Camel Valley, the pride of this place. The spectacular seasonal waterfalls cascading from a height of 1000ft to the base of the valley is the chief attraction for tourists, hikers and trekkers.

The Ghatandevi temple, dedicated to the Goddess of Ghats, lies on the right, short of Igatpuri, after crossing the Camel Valley. Behind the temple lies the Tringalwadi Fort, with the mountains of Durvar Utvad, Trimak and Harihar, looming in the horizon forming a spectacular backdrop.

A few kilometres further down from the Ghatandevi, one comes across the five waterfalls cascading in full splendour. The path leading to this place is a bit difficult. The best time to visit it, is during the monsoons.

Tringalwadi Fort is 3000ft high up on the mountains, its steps and walls still stand in fine condition. The secret path behind the fort, leads to the Hanuman temple. Atop the fort, the mountain ranges spanning from Kumpan to Kalsubai, along with the distant peaks of Utvad and Harihar are visible. The eastern side of the fort offers a wonderful view of the lake in the valley below. This is a great place to go cycling.

Located on the foothills just on the outskirts of the village, is a ‘math’ (house of saints). This place is known for the ‘Vipassana’- an ancient Buddhist style of meditation. ‘Vipassana’ has made Igatpuri famous globally, attracting people from various corners of the country and world over. The renowned pagoda of Dhammagiri serves as a landmark for Igatpuri.

A paradise for adventure enthusiasts, flanked by lofty peaks it holds challenging opportunities for trekkers and rock climbers. With endless stretches of greenery, pleasant weather, placid lakes and serene lakesides enhanced by the monsoon showers makes it an ultimate getaway amidst peace and solitude.
