Chakrata or Chakrauta a quaint little cantonment town with its old world charm, is situated between Yamuna and Tons River. The cantonment was established in 1866 by Colonel Hume of the 55th Regiment, British Indian Army. Chakrata was earlier known as Jaunsar Bawar and inhabited by Jaunsari tribes, is a fascinating destination situated at an elevation of 2270mts above sea level, in Dehradun district in the state of Uttarakhand, India.

 

For all the fuss and hearsay about Chakrata, one has to be here to get the feel of this fascinating place. So if you are one of those travellers seeking refuge from the city life looking out for a short peaceful vacation, Chakrata is the place to be. A secluded hill station, an exquisite place nestled amidst dense conifers, red rhododendron and oak trees is tranquilizing; serene and rejuvenating takes you back on your daily grind with a bang!

 

Entry timings at the Kalsi check post is restricted and controlled by the military. The access of Non-Indians to military cantonment of Chakrata is restricted.

 Orientation

Chakrata town is built along a ridge with a magnificent view of the greater Himalayas, is delightfully green, with the dense growth of deodar, Himalayan oak and rhododendron covering the hills. It is a picturesque place tucked away within the confines of a placid pollution free environment, the climate salubrious and pleasant almost throughout the year; snow bound during the winters, the thick woods rich in varied flora and fauna makes it an ideal spot for nature enthusiasts, birders, the adventurous and wild lifers.

 

To the east of Chakrata, lies the famous hill station of Mussoorie and on the west lies kaleidoscopic Kinnaur.

 

The region has a number of temples some noteworthy are at Hanol, the Mahasu Devta Temple dedicated to Lord Mahasu, Radina, Thaina, Indroli, Lakhwar, and Lakhamandal, on the banks of river Yamuna, known for its ancient Shiva Temple, which traces its existence to the legends of Mahabharata, the village also has several natural caves.

 

Around

Jaunsar-Bawar is an area surrounding Chakrata, home to the Jaunsari tribes, who follow some queer customs like polygamy and polyandry. Despite these strange practices the tribals are warm and hospitable.

 

Tiger Fall is the key attraction of Chakrata. This beautiful falls can be reached by taking an easy trek through the rhododendron and oak forest. Tiger Fall is one of the highest waterfalls of Uttarakhand, cascading from a height of 312 ft. Mess and quarters of Garhwal Rifles are located in Chilmiri Neck. This is an ideal spot for bird watching, enjoy nature and marvel at spectacular view of Himalayan peaks. The scenic view of verdant land and dense forests leaves an unforgettable impact on the visitors.

 

Deoban – a 13-km drive north of Chakrata, at an elevation of 9,400 ft, is an isolated beautiful alpine meadow that offers a panoramic view of the Himalayas stretching from Kinnaur to Garhwal and Kumaon. Surrounded by dense deodar forests it is rich in avifauna. There is an old, British-built Forest Rest House (FRH) ideal for a night halt. The road is narrow and the drive hair raising, would be best negotiated on a four-wheel drive.

 

Mundoli is a trekkers delight, its alpine meadows (2776 mts.), offers skiing opportunities, from November to April.

 

Kanasar, 28 km away from Chakrata, perched on the Chakrata-Tiuni motorable road,is the forest outpost of Koti-Kanasar. Home to the largest deodars and rated as the best cedar (deodar) forest in all of Asia, Kanasar’s beauty is picture perfect. The drive itself is awesome with views of the lofty mountains, dense forests, and scenic waterfalls with picnic spots along the route.
