Auli, a small city, nestled in the lap of snow-capped peaks (Alt. 2915 mts-3049 mts) ,is an important ski destination of Garhwal Himalayas, in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, India. It is known as 'Bugyal' in the local language, which means a meadow. Though Auli is less known ski destination than Shimla, Gulmarg or Manali but some French and Australian experts consider it be one of the best ski resorts in the world.

The neat slopes of Auli are stunning, covered with soft powdery snow, flanked by coniferous and oak forests, cool crisp air heavily ladden with pine scent, the azure skies and the panoramic view of mountains is splendid.

A perfect place to be in for both the experienced and amateur skiers. The virgin slopes about 5-7 km beckon you to ski, build a snowman and snow ball fights. It's the kind curtsies of two imported snow-packing machines which keep the slopes in order, preventing the formation of ice or crust.

If you are out for adventure, fun and frolic this winter, find yourself in Auli, in the vicinity of the mountain peaks Nanda Devi and Mana Parbat.

 Orientation

Instead of yet another winter by the sea head up north to Auli, a land of pristine beauty with snow clad slopes urging you to pick the ski gear and whiz down them, time and again, building up confidence with each passing day. Auli is electrifying, bound to exhilarate and thrill not for the meek-hearted or the lazy. Skiing is wonderful exercise. It could become addictive.

The view of the sunrise at dawn behind Nanda Devi is indescribable magnificent, watching the sky by night, and the snowflakes drift gently in the air, so magical; so peaceful and so beautiful. Yes, Auli can be balm to a city-wearied heart.

GMVN conducts 7 and 14 days skiing courses at Auli and special provisions for day tourists are also available. The conditions for skiing are perfect here. A 500 m long ski-lift and an 800 m long chair-lift link the upper and lower slopes. Walking through the misty slope provides one with the imposing spectacles of some of the lofty mountain ranges like Nanda Devi, Mana Paravat and Kamat. The best time to visit Auli is throughout the year except monsoons. But if one wants to enjoy the eternal bliss of snow then visit Auli from December end to March.

Auli Ropeway

Auli boasts the Asias highest and longest cable car covering a distance of 4km. This cable car wonder is named, Gondola. It also has a Chair Lift and a Ski-Lift. The ropeway of Auli connects Auli with Joshimath and it would take 15-20 minutes to reach Auli from Joshimath. The ropeway has ten towers of self-supporting steel structures. One gets a spectacular view of the majestic Himalayas on a Gondola ride.

Auli also offers the luxury of an 800 mts long chair lift linking the lower ski slopes with the upper region.
